Organizing toys on the cheap

I don’t know about you, but the organizational task I dread the most is wrangling my kids’ toys. Over the years they have accumulated a lot of playthings (mostly from grandparents, one particularly doting aunt and birthdays). Occasionally I weed out toys that are no longer age-appropriate, but still they seem to multiply. The result is a jumble of board games, one-piece-missing puzzles, half-done craft projects, headless dolls, a billion Lego pieces, and my personal nemesis—stuffed animals. Needless to say, my periodic meltdowns at the mess in our family room, where most of these toys reside, are now legendary in our household.

In researching ways to control toy chaos, I’ve found dozens of very expensive (and very cute) storage options. But I’m not interested in spending a lot of money on organizers. Instead I’m using a few frugally priced or FREE ways to whip our toys into shape:

* I love this bendy hamper, which holds about 25 of my daughter’s plush toys (scarily, only about half her collection). At $5, it’s a steal. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90182294

* Keeping game pieces and puzzles together is a challenge for my kids, even when there’s a sturdy box involved. So I wash and reuse the plastic insert bags that come in cereal and cracker boxes and use them to corral pieces within the box.

* In our house toys tend to magically migrate out of their storage spots, landing in the most peculiar places (like the Monopoly board I found behind the dryer). I’m all for letting my kids play creatively wherever they want…as long as the toys find their way back to where they belong. To aid this process, I bought one of these cute $10 totes (skipped the monogramming) and leave it near the stairs. At the end of the day my girls pick up the toys they’ve used, load them into the basket and carry them back to their proper place.

* All hail the mighty shoebox! Whether they once held Keds or stilettos, my family’s shoe boxes live another life as storage bins. Covering them with black-and-white newsprint gives them a pleasingly graphic and uniform look (plus, it’s a great kids’ art project). Into these eco-friendly catch-alls I’ve sorted little stuff like Lego pieces and those annoying plastic Pollys and My Little Ponys. (Sturdier shoeboxes work well for craft supplies, too.)

I’d love to hear your low- and no-cost toy organizing ideas—I’m currently trying to figure out how to store doll clothes!

Read The Summer Hideaway with us!

As you might have seen our book club has started up again and is currently reading The Summer Hideaway by Susan Wiggs. (Don’t have a copy yet? You can pick one up at your local Walmart.)

I’m going to be posting my thoughts on the book here for the next three weeks and hope you’ll join the discussion. I’ll also be drawing questions from our discussion guide. It has some great questions that really make you think—not only about the book but this about life.

This question in particular caught my attention so let’s make it our topic to talk about for this week! (See question after the jump!)

What is your first impression of George Bellamy? Does he remind you of anyone in your life? Can you create a really specific mental picture of your own grandfather? What did his voice and laughter sound like? How did he dress? What were some of his quirks? What did you enjoy doing with him?

My first impression is that George a really loveable, sweet, gentle guy who wants the best for everyone around him. I picture him being just like Arthur, the old man Kate Winslet befriends in the movie the Holiday. (Haven’t seen it? See a clip here).

My grandfather is also loveable, and sweet but can be stoic at times. He’s also a man of few words. He’ll tell you anything you want to know—but you have to do the asking. You can tell my grandpa gets a thrill out of playing with his grandchildren, the youngest of which is only three years old! He’s 85 but he doesn’t act a day over 60. One of my fondest memories is playing hide and go seek with him. My sister and I would shriek with delight when he snuck up on us in our hiding places!

Prologue, Chapters 1-2

What did you think of the first two chapters of The Summer Hideaway? I’m really enjoying it. I’m eager for Ross to come home so he can get back to his life and spend the limited time he has with his grandfather. I would also like to learn more about Claire’s past—the details of the murder she witnessed and why it “was so dangerous she couldn’t even trust the police”? Even in the first few chapters I think The Summer Hideaway’s author Susan Wiggs has done a great job of drawing us in to want to know more about Ross, Claire and George. They’ve each each taken such different paths in life so far, I’m interested to learn how it’ll be for George and Ross to pick up where they left off and how the romance between Claire and Ross is going to unfold! What do you think of the book so far?

Pull dinner from your freezer

Tonight is Freezer Dinner, an occasion for celebration in my house. I celebrate because I don’t have to cook anything, and my family celebrates because they can enjoy my company instead of watching me run around like a crazy woman trying to pull together a healthy, cheap meal (relaxed mommy = relaxed dinner). My frugal self celebrates, too, because Freezer Dinner knocks a chunk off my weekly grocery bill.

So what exactly is Freezer Dinner? I essentially throw open the doors of my freezer and defrost all the leftovers within. Doing so on a regular basis (every other Wednesday, in fact) means I don’t unintentionally let old dishes collect frost patterns in a far-off corner. Over time I’ve experimented with foods that seem to last longer in deep freeze than others, and tonight’s menu is a good guide:

* Curried chickpeas

* Beef stew

* White bean and chicken casserole

* Chipotle cornbread

Beans and legumes perform especially well (plus, they’re both wholesome and cheap). I always have a stash of homemade bread (sliced, so I can take out a few pieces at a time). Dessert? I often dump all those half-empty bags of frozen berries into the blender and make a fruit smoothie.

Here are a few more tips to help you benefit from Freezer Dinner:

*Even though it takes up more space, I always freeze leftovers in single-serving portions. Every container gets a label, and I press plastic wrap or wax paper into the top of the food before putting on the lid. On Freezer Dinner night everyone gets to choose their own “meal” (no fighting over the beef stew!).

*Two days prior to eating, I remove the containers from the freezer and let them defrost in the fridge. I’ve found that defrosting many foods (meats, especially) in the microwave changes their consistency and sometimes turns them into mush. Slow reheating is best, too.

*To boost freezer-dulled flavors, I often snip herbs like chives or basil on the food after reheating. No need to purchase pricey fresh herbs just for the occasion—I keep some in my freezer year-round.
