Have a win-win Halloween
Every year I’m of two minds about Halloween — I want to give out fun candy because the kids love it, but I know it’s bad for them and their parents will toss a lot of it anyway (or eat it themselves!). Plus, with so many kids in my neighborhood, it’s expensive to buy enough for everyone. What’s a fun-loving but guilt-ridden and frugal mom to do?
That’s why I’m glad I found these YummyEarth lollipops on Amazon. They come in delicious flavors the kids will love (sour apple, blueberry, strawberry, grape, watermelon), and they’re organic, made without corn syrup or artificial dyes (they are fun tongue-staining colors though — they’re just colored with fruit extracts) and allergen free. I mean, they’re still candy — it’s not like giving out boxes of raisins (everyone avoided that house when I was a little trick-or-treater!) — but it feels less terrible for the kids. The best part? Amazon is selling a box of 150 for just over $15 — which means they cost about 10 cents apiece. Everybody wins!

Find new laundry products
With the kids back in school, the laundry is starting to pile up. I’ve found some great new products that make keeping clothes clean a lot easier, cheaper and more efficient.
Bounce Dryer Bars ($9.49 for four month; drugstore.com): I can never remember to put fabric softener or a dryer sheet in with my loads, but with this new dryer bar attaches to the insideof your dryer and freshens each load automatically. Depending on which size you choose, you replace it every two to four months. With two scents—outdoor fresh and fresh linen—to choose from, clothes are guaranteed to smell clean!
Tide Stain Release ($6.36 for 18 count; Sam’s Club): Pump up your regular detergent with this in-wash
booster. Add to your wash along with your detergent to get rid of common stains like ketchup, jelly, and grass stains. No time spent on
pre-treating!
Green Works Natural Laundry Detergent ($11.99 for 30 loads; drugstore.com): My skin is very sensitive so finding a detergent that is dye-and fragrance-free and gets my laundry clean is important to me. This new laundry detergent gets the job done using natural- and plant-based ingredients, and the price is comparable to regular laundry detergents. Check out greenworkscleaners.com for a $3 off coupon!

Ask for slightly bruised fruits and veggies
Supermarkets typically package overripe or flawed produce and sell it supercheap, but don’t stop there. If there’s a farm stand in your area, ask for “utility fruit”—fruit that that has bruises or discoloration but is still good to eat. At my local farm stand, I picked up a box of about 20 utility tomatoes for $4 and made three meals’ worth of delicious spaghetti sauce. I also nabbed some bruised peaches. After trimming off the mushy parts, I sliced them up, mixed in a little lemon juice to prevent browning, and froze the slices in baggies. Hint: You have to ask for these leftovers, since stores and stands don’t usually display them for sale.

Start the morning off right
Have you noticed that a healthful breakfast kind of sets the tone for the day? If I eat something good for me in the morning, I tend to make better food choices all day. One of my go-to good-for-me breakfasts is Kashi cereals. They taste great (Heart to Heart Honey Toasted is my favorite, my hubby prefers the Summer Berry Granola, and we both love Mighty Bites, even though it’s for kids…), plus they’re super-healthy (hello fiber, protein and whole grains!), stay crunchy in milk, and set me on the right course for the day. The best part? Kashi almost always has a coupon or two on its web site. Right now they’re offering $1.50 off all their cereals! Click here to get yours.
