We eat a lot of cereal in my house – and I mean, a lot. It’s breakfast, a snack, sometimes even dinner. So I’m always on the lookout for ways to save on it. A new program at CVS will pay you for not using plastic shopping bags.

Here’s how it works: For 99 cents, buy a “GreenBagTag” at any CVS story. Clip it on to your key ring or a cloth shopping bag. Each time you complete a purchase and don’t take a plastic shopping bag, the cashier will scan your tag. For every four times you go green, you’ll earn $1 in ExtraCare bucks, redeemable on future CVS purchases.

To participate, you must be a member of CVS’s ExtraCare program, but it’s a snap to sign up. Go to CVS.com and click on “Get your ExtraCare Rewards today” in the top bar.

GreenBagTags will start showing up in stores this weekend and should be in all CVS branches within three weeks, said a company spokesperson.

In my house, there’s been a constant battle over peanut butter for years now. My hubby likes the all-natural kind, just peanuts and salt. But I don’t love the flavor, and re-stirring in the oil when it separates out is messy and a pain. Plus, I haven’t had much luck baking with all-natural peanut butter. Still, I don’t want a ton of sugar or any hydrogenated oil on my PB&J. What to do? In the spirit of marital harmony, we found a compromise—peanut butters that have a few wholesome ingredients to make them a little sweeter than all-natural PB and to keep them no-stir. My two favorites, which are approved by my nutrition label-reading hubby, are the following:

Peanut Butter & Co. Smooth Operator

This is one tasty peanut butter that makes a delicious sandwich and bakes into fantastic cookies. I also love to swirl a spoonful into my morning oatmeal. And spread it on an English muffin for a snack. And … well, you get the idea! It’s lightly sweetened with a little cane juice, which is a less refined version of sugar, so it retains a few trace minerals. And it stays together thanks to a touch of trans fat free palm fruit oil. At $5 for a 16-oz. jar it’s a bit on the pricier side—but for me, an extra dollar seems like a good deal for something as important as peanut butter. It comes in a chunky variety too. Look for it in grocery stores and at ilovepeanutbutter.com.

Smart Balance

This is another delicious peanut butter that satisfies my husband’s nutrition requirements and my flavor and texture needs. It’s sweetened with a touch of molasses, which gives it a rich flavor, and it even has some flaxseed oil in it (palm fruit oil too), so it gives you some of those all-important omega-3 fatty acids. At $4 for a 16-oz. jar (creamy or chunky) it’s priced competitively, and I see it in many supermarkets, so you may find it a more convenient choice. It works great in baked goods, too.
