Petfinder.com, an online database of adoptable pets, launched a free iPhone application earlier this month (it’s also available for the iPod Touch). The app will determine your location via the GPS on your phone and then show you available pets in your area. You can sort results by species, breed, age, size and gender. You can also bookmark your favorite pets and quickly access contact information and directions to the shelter or rescue group where animals are located. Download the app at itunes.com/appstore.

Check out petfinder.com’s new program, Fur Keeps, at petfinder.com/furkeeps. The site is dedicated to decreasing the number of pets surrendered to shelters (sadly, 84 percent of animal adoption organizations currently have adoptable pets who were given up due to issues that could have been resolved with proper training and resources). It offers advice for potential and new pet parents, such as an adoption checklist (to be sure you’re ready to take in that pet) and tips for how to make it through the first 30 days after bringing the pet home. Like most couples today, my husband and I are trying to spend less and save more. Here are a few things we’ve done to conserve cash when it comes to caring for our two cats:

* We were paying a lot at the vet, so we shopped around for a new one. We called nearby clinics and asked about their prices, and asked friends for recommendations. We ended up switching to a friend’s vet. An exam used to cost us about $90 per cat; now we pay $45 (we live in New York City so the cost is still pretty high!).

* Find toys around the house. My cats love batting around Q-Tips, emery boards and ponytail holders (be sure to monitor cats as they play with these items—and put them out of reach after use. They could potentially be a choking hazard if your cat puts them in her mouth).

* Cat food is expensive at our nearby corner deli (about $3 for an 18-oz. box of Cat Chow). So we make sure to pick up a couple of big bags of food when we go to Walmart or Target, where it is much cheaper (it’s usually about $15 or so for a 16-lb. bag, depending on sales). This saves us about $2 per pound.

* Barter with other animal lovers. My former roommate and I used to feed each other’s cats when one of us went out of town—that way, we didn’t have to pay a cat sitter. You could do this with neighbors or friends as well.

Dogs and cats provide tons of love, but they also require lots of stuff—toys, food, leashes, prescriptions, collars, vet records…the list goes on. Keep track of everything with a labelmaker. This way, you won’t lose supplies and waste money buying new items.

* Do you make your own pet food? Use a labeler to identify the meal, note thawing and cooking instructions and post the date it was frozen.

* Put toys, doggie sweaters, leashes, collars and other accessories that you don’t use regularly in storage boxes. Use your labelmaker to mark the containers.

* Do you take food out of its original bag and store it in plastic containers? Note the expiration date on the box so you’ll use it up before it goes bad.

* If you send your dog to doggie day care, add a label with your name, phone number and your dog’s name inside the leash loop. This ensures that your dog’s leash comes home with him at the end of the day.

* Going away? Avoid mishaps by providing your pet sitter with detailed instructions. Label cans of food and your animal’s pill box so that your sitter gives the proper amount and adheres to any prescription directions.

* Label file folders to keep track of your pet’s license and registration information, adoption papers, medical records and insurance documents.

Taking your cat or dog with you to Grandma’s house this holiday? Avoid illnesses and accidents with these tips.

Prevent nausea. If you’re worried your pet might suffer motion sickness, see your vet before you leave and ask for a prescription to treat the condition. When you do hit the road, cover the pet’s carrier with a towel so it won’t see scenery whizzing by, making it dizzy.

Take frequent bathroom breaks. Be sure pups are on a leash at gas stations or rest stops so they don’t get lost. Put a small tray of litter in your cat’s carrier but also bring a regular-sized litterbox. Many cats won’t go in their carrier if they’re stressed, and “holding it” can cause urinary tract infections. Let them go in the bigger box during stops and hotel stays.

Find pet-friendly hotels. Locate lodging at petswelcome.com. Call the hotel you choose ahead of time and reserve a room with a door that opens into an inside corridor, not outdoors. If your animal gets loose, you’re more likely to find him indoors than out.

Puppies, smaller dogs and senior pooches don’t always want to go outside to use the bathroom in cold weather—but you don’t want your canine relieving itself inside on the floor or carpet! Instead of purchasing scented pee pads or an expensive elimination unit, make a portable, indoor potty area for your dog. Place newspaper on a large sheet pan (around 18″ X 26″ X 1″), which you can purchase inexpensively at a discount kitchen supply store. Put the potty area in a place your dog can easily reach that is away from his food and water, possibly in a bathroom or the kitchen. Every day, replace the newspaper and wipe the tray with a wet paper towel and a mild dishwashing detergent. At least once a month, disinfectant the tray with hot water and bleach.

Cut back to keep your pet healthy

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 44 percent of dogs and 57 percent of cats in the United States are either overweight or obese. As a result, pets are in real danger of developing serious and costly diseases, such as diabetes, arthritis and other avoidable conditions. To help shed some pet pounds and make that bag of dog food last longer, cut down on the amount of food you put in your pet’s bowl. First, record his pre-diet weight. Over a two-week period, reduce the amount you normally feed him by one-fourth. Also, break medium-sized or larger biscuits into two so that your pet has lower calorie treats for today and tomorrow. After two weeks, weight your pet. If he has lost even a little weight, you’re on the right track.

Keep pet hair off your furniture

Do you love when your cat or dog curls up with you on the couch, but hate the hair she leaves behind? Here’s a simple, low-cost solution: Watch for home sales at department stores, and buy a few inexpensive placemats that match your furniture and décor. Place the mats on your cat or dog’s favorite place to sit (my cat’s most-loved spot: the couch arms). Pet hair and dirt will end up on the placemat, not your couch. (Just throw the mat in the washer when it gets grimy.)

Do you feed your cat Premium Edge Finicky Adult food or Premium Edge Hairball food from Diamond Pet Foods? If so, return the package to the place of purchase—according to the ASPCA, these foods are being recalled because they lack thiamine, a vitamin that cats can’t make on their own and must get from food.

So far, there have been 14 confirmed cases of thiamine deficiency. If your pet has eaten this food, schedule an appointment with your vet—thiamine deficiency can cause neurological problems such as loss of balance and even deadly seizures, says the ASPCA. (Other signs of the deficiency include lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, mental dullness, dilated pupils, increased respiratory rate and low body temperature.) If given anti-seizure medication and thiamine supplementation promptly, your cat should recover.
