Check out Quaker Oats’ new online application called “Create Your Day.” Visit quakeroats.com/createyourday and fill in the blanks (think Mad Libs) to make a story about your day ahead. With the recent news about Haiti, now is a good time to get around to a chore you may have been putting off for awhile—cleaning out your closets. According to Soles4Souls, a charity that sends your old shoes to those in need, Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unworn shoes around the house. Sound familiar? If you have gently worn shoes you never wear anymore, drop them off at a participating location or ship them to one of the charity’s U.S. locations. You can even make it a community event, with their new Project Haiti campaign. Learn more about it here.

While money is needed most in relief efforts for Haiti, this is an easy way to help in addition to your monetary donation. Also, it’s terrific motivation to get cleaning, so get started now!

On my ongoing quest to find inexpensive or free ways to give back, I nearly forgot one of the most basic forms of generosity that directly saves lives: giving blood. I guess I’m not alone; less than 10% of Americans donate blood annually, and of those who don’t, most say they “never thought of it” as their reason. But each donation can save three lives, and this summer—the season in which most blood shortages occur—I encourage you to take part. And here’s a neat new promotion: America’s Blood Centers and Nexcare have created a collection of GIVE bandages to raise awareness and thank donors. They will be distributed in blood centers across the country, and free packages will also be available at Nexcare’s website throughout July. Donate, and wear yours with pride!

Every 26 seconds a teen drops out of school or fails to graduate on time. Here’s your chance to do something about it. On Thursday, April 23, participating Taco Bell restaurants will donate 15 percent of the day’s sales to the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens—a nonprofit organization that helps kids graduate from high school. April is Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month and the ASPCA is urging animal lovers to “Go Orange for Animals” by wearing the group’s signature color, adopting an animal or hosting a fundraiser. The organization also wants to educate the public about animal cruelty. Learn how to spot an abused animal and how to report it.

The ASPCA is hosting three celebrations across the country in honor of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month; they will all feature live music, refreshments, ASPCA experts and lots of pet-related activities.

Tuesday, April 7 in New York City – New Yorkers can attend the event that runs from 4-8 p.m. at Union Square Park.

Saturday, April 18 in Austin, Texas – Bring your pet to the Rock Garden area of Zilker Park for the first annual Wag-n-Walk one-mile dog walk at 11 a.m. Stay for more festivities, such as a doggy obstacle course or discounted services from local spay/neuter groups, after the walk.

Saturday, April 25 in Venice Beach, Calif. – There will be a Wag-n-Walk on the West Coast starting at the Windward Plaza area of Venice Beach at 11 a.m. Festivities will continue after the walk.
