Make your own pet potty area

Puppies, smaller dogs and senior pooches don’t always want to go outside to use the bathroom in cold weather—but you don’t want your canine relieving itself inside on the floor or carpet! Instead of purchasing scented pee pads or an expensive elimination unit, make a portable, indoor potty area for your dog. Place newspaper on a large sheet pan (around 18″ X 26″ X 1″), which you can purchase inexpensively at a discount kitchen supply store. Put the potty area in a place your dog can easily reach that is away from his food and water, possibly in a bathroom or the kitchen. Every day, replace the newspaper and wipe the tray with a wet paper towel and a mild dishwashing detergent. At least once a month, disinfectant the tray with hot water and bleach.

Save money on cat toys

Wrestle sausage: Stuff a plastic grocery bag and a tablespoon of organic catnip into an old sock. Tie a shoelace about 2 inches from the sock’s open end. Dangle it in front of the cat so your pet can wrestle with it. The cat will love the crackling noise the bag makes.

Ring toss: Flatten an empty paper-towel roll and cut as many ¼-inch rings out of it as you can. Throw them above the cat’s head one at a time to entice your pet to leap.

Save big with one small change

Recently, I’ve started brewing my own iced tea at home and bringing it to work in a travel mug. I was buying tea out once a day at a nearby coffee shop or at our company’s cafeteria, costing me about $2 a pop. While that’s not a lot of money, it started to add up. (I also wanted to cut down on my caffeine intake and I couldn’t find decaffeinated tea at restaurants and cafés, but I could brew it easily at home.) I was floored when I figured up how much I could save by making this change:

A whopping $475 a year!

A box of 48 Lipton decaffeinated tea bags costs about $4 at my local grocery store. I get about 40 glasses out of a box—that’s 10 cents per glass. I’m saving $1.90 per glass by not going to a restaurant. Over the course of a year (assuming I drink five glasses a week), that’s almost $500 in savings!

A living room makeover for less

Barbecue? Nope, the first thing I did this past weekend was tackle a project I’ve wanted to accomplish for a long time: paint my living room bookcases. I got them super cheap at a local Salvation Army, but they were a little blah and needed a coat of paint to brighten them up and give the living room a lighter look for summer. The best part is that it’s such an easy and affordable way to give furniture a new look: I spent just $32.57 buying supplies: a drop cloth, paint tray, paintbrush and two quarts of oil-based ivory paint. It took a lot of elbow grease (consider it your workout for the day!) but in the end, I think it was time and money very well spent! The room looks so much airier. Battle garden-eating deer

We moved into our house three years ago this month, and were delighted to find then that the perennial garden started by the former owners was blooming beautifully. Lily of the valley, peonies, Siberian iris, Stargazer lilies—all showing off their blossoms, and some filled with buds that promised more summer splendor. Then the deer took notice, and steadily over the course of a few weeks, the garden looked as though a fire had raged through it. A few bare stalks, some yellowing leaves and the tiny gnawed-at trunks of several saplings were left behind.

This year, at the first signs of sprouts and new foliage, we started spraying once a week with Liquid Fence, a deer and rabbit repellant (liquidfence.com). And so far, Bambi and company have stayed away (perhaps two nibbles, but that’s all). The product smells awful when you apply it; after all, it’s made with “putrescent egg solids” and garlic. But the odor subsides quickly and the rain doesn’t seem to diminish its effectiveness. The premixed solution is pricey—about $25 a gallon online, and a little more at our local hardware store—but that amount is enough for over a month of spraying. And it kept over the winter in the garage.

Celebrate Super Bowl Sunday!

Are you ready for some football? Super Bowl Sunday will be here before you know it! This year, you can throw a fantastic party that will score a touchdown for your guests without breaking the bank. Here are a few tips to kick off your gridiron bash:

1. Host a potluck
Instead of ordering chicken platters or pizza, put a homemade spin on your football festivities. Completely slash your food costs by asking your guests to bring an appetizer, dessert or beverage. Try to coordinate the menu options to avoid ending up with an endless supply of potato chips … and nothing else for guests to eat.

2. Put on your chef’s hat
If you don’t want to burden guests with food requests, here are a few quick and easy recipes you can make (or take with you to a potluck party).

EXTRA POINT: All these recipes cost less than $2 per serving!

Beer-and-Cheese Biscuits
Broccoli-and-Cheese-Stuffed Baked Potatoes
Easy Vanilla Cupcakes
Super Bowl Pumpkin Spice Cake

Spicy Roasted Potato Wedges

3. Search for coupons
Hit up coupon sites like coupons.com or scour through your Sunday paper to find savings on party food staples such as chips, dip, soda, etc.

4. Decorate on a dollar
When it comes to Super Bowl parties, the game really is the center of attention. However, if you want to go that extra yard, head over to the dollar store to pick up great party items on the cheap: streamers, balloons in team colors, foam footballs, etc. Target has a $1 section featuring 12-count packs of green paper cups, plates and bowls emblazoned with footballs.

5. Rent a TV for a day
Electronic retailers tend to offer great deals on big-screen TVs around this time of year. However, if you’re feeling reluctant to make an investment in a brand new high-definition, flat screen TV, renting one for your Super Bowl party is an attractive option.

Rental stores, such as Rent-A-Center, allow you to borrow one of their screens for the big game. The TVs vary in size, shape and rental price, so there’s definitely a set for you to take home and rock the party! (Enter here for a chance to win a 32″ LCD/DVD Combo HDTV!)

Creamy-Dill Dip With Pita Chips

DIP:

2 cups low-fat Greek yogurt
3 Tbsp. chopped dill
1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
1 tsp. finely grated lemon zest
1 clove garlic, finely minced
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper

PITA CHIPS:

1 12-oz. package pita bread
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper

1. Make dip: Stir together all ingredients; chill.

2. Make chips: Preheat oven to 375°F. Cut each pita in half, then cut each half into three wedges. Transfer to a bowl, drizzle with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

3. Divide pita between two baking sheets. Bake, rotating pans midway through cooking, until light brown and crisp, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool.

PER SERVING: 175 Cal., 8g Fat (1g Sat.), 0mg Chol., 2g Fiber, 7g Pro., 21g Carb., 542mg Sod.

Garlic-Parmesan Popcorn

Cook: 10 min.
Yield: 20 cups
Cost per serving: 30¢

3 Tbsp. unsalted butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
1 cup unpopped popcorn
1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
Salt

1. In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter. Add garlic and cook 1 minute, stirring, then remove saucepan from heat and set aside to cool slightly.

2. Warm vegetable oil in a large, deep pot with a tight-fitting lid over high heat. When oil is hot, add unpopped popcorn, cover pot, and cook 1 minute. Vigorously slide pot back and forth over burner until popcorn begins to pop. Continue cooking and shaking pot until popping subsides, about 5 minutes. Remove pot from heat and transfer popcorn to large serving bowl.

3. Pour butter-garlic mixture over popcorn, sprinkle with Parmesan and cayenne and toss to coat. Season with salt and serve.

PER SERVING (1 cup): 73 Cal., 4g Fat (2g Sat.), 7mg Chol., 1g Fiber, 2g Pro., 7g Carb., 97mg Sod.

Make your own holiday cards

With money extra tight this holiday season, I have decided to make my own holiday cards and gifts using this great clip art book— Memories of a Lifetime: Christmas: Artwork for Scrapbooks & Fabric Transfer Crafts (only $10.17 from Amazon.com). You can punch out the images, or use the CD (included with book) to make the entire card on your computer. Print them out onto pretty paper, then add some glitter and ribbon to make them a little more festive.

I also plan to give homemade candied nuts this year, and I can use the CD to make personalized labels.

Spicy Roasted Potato Wedges

Bake: 40 min.
Serves: 8
Cost per serving: 29¢

5 russet potatoes, cut into 1/2-inch wedges (about 31/2 lb.)
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 Tbsp. smoked paprika
Salt and pepper
1 tsp. cayenne pepper
1 tsp. dried thyme
1 clove garlic, minced

1. Preheat oven to 450°F. In a large bowl, combine potatoes, oil, paprika, salt, pepper, cayenne and thyme; toss well to coat.

2. Divide potatoes between 2 rimmed baking sheets, spreading in a single layer. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove pans from oven and flip potatoes over. Sprinkle with garlic. Return pans to oven and bake 20 minutes longer.

3. Serve potatoes hot or at room temperature.

PER SERVING: 223 Cal., 7g Fat (1g Sat.), 0mg Chol., 3g Fiber, 4g Pro., 37g Carb., 156mg Sod.
