Watch Netflix movies and TV episodes instantly!

Being such a big movie fan, I’ve found Netflix a great low-cost service. Some weekends I find myself watching a little more television then I like to admit, especially when I don’t have any Netflix DVDs left to view. That’s why I’m obsessed with the Roku (Roku.com; $99). Using the device you can watch more than 12,000 Netflix movies and TV shows instantly (unlimited with your subscription!), or you can purchase over 40,000 movies, plus more from Amazon.com (which are stored in your amazon.com account forever). The Roku hooks up to your Internet connection and wirelessly streams the movies from the computer to the TV. The quality is terrific and even better if you use a HDMI cord to get HD quality. You can pause, fast forward and rewind just like a DVD. And the setup is a breeze—it took me less than 5 minutes to figure out. This device has also been great for all my summer trips. I can take the box with me and hook up to the Internet from anywhere I go and get all my movies from home instead of lugging DVDs.

Hitting the movie theater is costly these days (especially for concession stand addicts, such as myself), but I still think it’s one of the most fun, relaxing things you can do with friends and family. So, here’s some good news!

AMC’s 2009 Summer MovieCamp is throwing a bone to families with little ones. Every Wednesday from now until July 29, AMC theaters will charge $1 per person to view the G- and PG-rated films on their list of hit 2008 films, such as Horton Hears a Who and Kung Fu Panda. Even better, admission and concession proceeds will benefit Variety-The Children’s Charity and the Will Rogers Institute. Find participating locations at amctheatres.com/smc.

Download the free trial version of Live Happy, an iPhone application that offers feel-good tips based on research conducted by Sonja Lyubomirksy, a psychologist and the author of The How of Happiness. The app prompts you to do mood-boosting activities, such as typing out your thoughts about a recent happy memory or e-mailing a thank-you note to friend. You can also set and keep track of your happiness goals, record acts of kindness in a journal and take surveys to assess your happiness level and personality traits. The free version lets you complete up to 40 different activities; after that, upgrade to the full version for $6.99 to do more entries and to ask Lyubomirksy questions.

Kmart has inspired me to host a summertime tea party this summer, with these great new home décor items that are on sale right now. Instead of doing hot tea, I’ll be serving an array of flavored iced teas (my favorite is peach!), accompanied with some cucumber sandwiches, deviled eggs, and biscuits with clotted cream. It’s hard to pass up a $4.99 tablecloth, $6.99 egg platter,and a $9.99 cake stand. Now I have a excuse to invite my girlfriends over to catch up and enjoy the warm weather.

Find a bird nest, win a prize

Here’s a great way to tear your kids (and yourself!) away from the computer: the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is offering prizes to anyone who finds a “funky nest in a funky place.”

What constitutes a “funky place?” Almost anywhere, from on top of an awning, on a garage shelf, or inside an old boot. (I once had a phoebe build a nest atop a light fixture on my porch. What a kick it was to watch the eggs hatch and the baby birds fledge!) To enter the contest, take a photograph, make a drawing, write a story or shoot a video. Prizes include a Leica compact digital camera, bird feeders, shrubs for planting, and bird posters.

If so, make sure you take advantage of the 50,000 applications and services available for download in Apple’s App Store – many of which won’t cost you a thing and will lighten your daily load and even save you money!

Cheap gas. With rising gas prices on the horizon for summer, save a few extra bucks using this app that lists the lowest gas prices in your area.

Where. Whether you’re looking for great places to eat, in need of a coffee fix, searching for the cheapest gas or upcoming concert event — Where can get you there and more. When you’re on the go, this location-based application connects you with the people and places around you.

Mint. Keep track and manage your personal finances anytime from anywhere. Mint allows you to have secure access to your bank and credit card accounts, complete with colorful data charts to keep you on top of your budget. The tool will also alert you when your credit card balances are running low.

Reading programs that pay back

This past year my kindergartener has become an avid reader. So of course I’m excited about all the great reading programs to keep her motivated and ready for school in September. Here are four free summer reading programs you may want to check out:

1) Look into Bookworm Wednesdays at National Amusements Theatres. Every Wednesday at 10 a.m., starting July 6, your child can get free admission to a select children’s film when he presents a book report.

2) At TD Bank (formerly Commerce Bank), your child can earn $10 to be deposited into a Young Savers account when he reads 10 books between May 4 and September 30.

3) As part of the Feed Your Brain summer reading program, Half Price Books will give your child a $3 gift card each week she reads 15 minutes per day between June 1 and July 31.

4) At Barnes & Noble, kids in grades 1-6 can earn a free book when they read eight books between May 26 and September 7.

With summer barbecue season approaching, I’m in need of some great evites to send out. Bored with the generic evites, I’ve come across pingg.com, a site that provides stylish evites for free! You can pick from a selection of images from the site’s gallery or upload one of your own photos. Invitations can be sent via email, print, SMS/mobile or you can even upload it to your social network like Facebook. Your event page can then be customized adding music, maps, even a news feed to give guest up-to-the-minute details. At the end of the party upload photos to the site to share with all your attendees. I’ll be using pingg.com for all my summertime celebrations.

I don’t know about you but I love a good live CD, which was why I was thrilled to hear that Coldplay will be giving away a FREE live disc on May 15! Celebrate Mother’s Day

You don’t have to book a table at an expensive restaurant to show Mom you care. Here are six low-cost ways to shower her with love this Sunday:

* Write her a letter telling her why you love her so much, and include your favorite memories of her—some funny, some sweet, some silly. You could even ask her siblings, friends, co-workers and neighbors to write letters explaining why they love and appreciate her, then compile them into a scrapbook.

* Make Mom’s favorite meal—even if no one else in the family likes it!

* Pack a picnic lunch and take it to the park. After you eat, take a leisurely stroll together.

* Do a chore for your mom you know she dislikes, whether it’s washing the car, unloading the dishwasher or pulling weeds.

* Visit the maternity ward of the hospital where you were born and peek at the babies in the nursery (call ahead to ask about visiting hours). Let her reminisce about the day you were born.

* Go through old photos together. Recall your favorite memories, such as vacations, graduations and weddings. Gather the best pictures of you and her and compile a “Mom and Me” photo album.
