Whoa—A Starbucks Coupon for $23.60?!

When we asked you on our Facebook page what little things you splurge on (that you don’t feel guilty about!), many said manicures, treats for your children or grandkids and magazines. My spending vice? Coffee.

I spend $1.75 every morning at the little market down my block for my morning cup of joe. When you add it up, it seems crazy to spend so much on a daily treat, but really, I’m paying for a lot more than a hot beverage in a styrofoam cup. For me, it’s all about the ritual and placing my order just how I like it (Put the milk in first, please!). Or better yet, having the guy behind the counter know my order by heart, remember my name, and hand my coffee to me with a smile—as if we are sharing a little secret. Pathetic as it may seem, my am coffee run is often times the brightest spot to my day. (Well, it certainly makes the crowded NYC subways more bearable!)

So what’s better than a cup of coffee? A free cup of coffee. Sure, Starbucks drinks are overpriced, but boy do they deliver on your birthday coupon. Case in point: Logan Warren, a 22 year-old student in Texas made sure he used his to the fullest. His birthday coupon order was a Trenta (31 o.z.!) Java Chip Frappucino with 16 shots of espresso and various powders and flavorings. The grand total for  this colossal caffeinated beverage was $23.60! There you  have it, folks, the most expensive cup of coffee known to man. Sadly though, Warren could hardly stomach his celebratory drink, and described it as “tolerable…but not good.” Well, I guess you gotta give the guy credit for trying to make the most of a coupon!

Tell us: Do you think this was a silly way to spend a free birthday coupon? What would your free Starbucks birthday drink be? (Mmm…Caramel Frappucino!)

  1. My usual Rasberry Chai Tea Latte, but I’d go large this time for sure!! no second thoughts about that!

  2. Uh yeah, it was a waste considering he couldn’t stomach it! Keep it simple, go with what you know you will love and enjoy. If it were me I would have gotten a Caramel Frappucino my favorite, no wasting and it would have been enjoyed!

  3. i can’t get my coupon i’ve tried several times, was looking forward to a peppermint mocha!!

  4. I get the same free drink every year…a Mocha Frappucino – Venti! ;-)

  11. Caramel Frappucino

  12. mine would be a Caramel Macchiato

  13. That is a drink he would have never ordered and paid for out of his own pocket. Good for him for trying something new. Boo that it was only tolerable :(

  14. Triple, Venti, 140 Degree, No Foam, Caramel Latte please!

  15. Actually if he didn’t like it Starbucks policy is, they will make something again and again until its to your liking.

  16. I LIKE THEM ALL. THE CLOSEST STARBUCKS FOR ME IS 37 MILES. SO I TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ALL KINDS WHEN I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY.

  17. My closest Starbucks is 50 miles away, so every October I make sure to make the trek to my nearest big city to collect on all of my birthday freebies. I get the venti peppermint mocha with an extra shot and soy milk. It’s a pretty pricey drink, and delicious!

  18. carmel macchiato~yyuumm!

  19. I would get an Apple Chai Tea or a Caramel Macchiato!!

  20. I agree with Jonna. I hate trying something new and paying for it and not liking it. I always get the same thing. So, I would have done the same thing, maybe not so many shots of espresso.. Way to go. I love Starbucks.. I just moved and am now 40 miles to the nearest one and so every chance I get “not often enough” I go or have someone pick me one up on their way to my house or something. Use to go every day, sometimes twice a day..

  21. Mocha latte all the way!

Yes, I think it was very silly – he could have had a pleasant drink. I use my coupon and let my son order what he would like and then we are both happy.

  23. I also think it was pretty silly, and opportunistic. I work for the e-commerce side of a major jewelry retailer, and it’s almost nauseating to hear some customers try to squeeze as much “free” out of a really nice offer, and never mind that it will lock out others. I guess I just don’t really care for people who “take advantage.”
