I have a few more pages to go in our book club book The Summer Hideaway. Have you been reading? I’d love to hear what you thought of the book including your thoughts on this question from our discussion guide:
Why does Claire feel so vulnerable in a small town like Avalon? What do you suppose was going through George’s head as he revisited the places of his youth? The Sky River Bakery and Camp Kioga in particular were important parts of his past. What emotions do they seem to bring up in the present?
I think Claire feels her odds of being exposed are higher in Avalon. Unlike in a big city, people in this small town seem to want to get to know each other well, which makes it tough for her to hide.
With regards to George’s trips down memory lane, he seemed to be nostalgic but also a little regretful—especially about having lost so much time with his brother. His visits seem to drive him to make the most of his days left, whether that means seeing his brother or doing the things he’s always wanted to—like going skydiving.
What do you think about Claire’s feelings about Avalon and George’s thoughts on returning to the places of his youth?
