The Grocery Challenge is in full swing!
More than 7,000 participants in All You’s Grocery Challenge are heading into their second week. The challenge, which lasts until August 17, dares participants to spend less than $25 per person each week on groceries. The winner, who not only stays under budget but also displays creativity and makes healthy meals, could get a $1,000 grocery card, a year’s supply of Knorr side dishes and the chance to appear in All You magazine.
On our Grocery Challenge blog, participants have been offering their reflections of the first week and advice for their fellow grocery shoppers. This week we also had tips from special guests – bloggers from Mommy Snacks, Bargain Briana, Fiddledeedee, Common Sense with Money and BeCentsable. Check out some penny-pinching tips from our Grocery Challengers:
From Tracy: When we decide to get take out we buy the main part and supplement the sides with what we have at home. We will go to Taco Bell and purchase bean burritos take them home and get out the chips and salsa and drinks from home. Our whole family eats for under $5 and the kids couldn’t be happier.
From Bargain Briana: Sign up for any store loyalty cards and be sure to link them to eCoupon sites such as Upromise, Cellfire, Shortcuts.com.
From Gloria Westerman:You can save on sirloin, bread and bakery items on certain days during the week. Just ask the supermarket manager which day is the best for discounts on [these] items.
From Katherine at BeCentsable: Rather than buying convenience foods, learn to make your own from scratch. If you make a large batch ahead of time and freeze or store the extras in an airtight container, you will save yourself time and money.

We are going on vacation this week with our whole family (23) To save money we eat meals at the house and each family takes a turn fixing a dinner. We chose spaghetti which we use sauce we canned from our own garden. We have a fun vacation and save on food.

If you wonder what happened to your cash at the end of the week, think back to all of the runs through the McDonalds or Starbucks drive-thru for that quick pick-me-up cup of Joe. I’ve found I’m less tempted to do that if I don’t have cash on hand. I have to think about getting out my debit card. Also, my hubby came up with a great recipe for a wonderful iced coffee that rivals McDonald’s but for pennies a cup. Just brew 8 oz of very strong coffee. Add a tablespoon +/- of Agave Nectar (sweet all-natural sweetener) or sweetener of your choice and 12 oz of milk, soy milk, or almond milk. Mix all together and then pour over ice. I prefer the almond milk, but they all taste good. The best part is two-fold: cheap and can be made in decaf.
I also discovered a great website for saving money on weddings: http://www.inexpensivedreamweddings.com. It has great articles from a hotel insider on how to beat the system.
