Get $200 off your vacation!

travel cheap

Hoping to hit the beach soon? I just returned from a trip to Mexico (Playa del Carmen). It was fantastic: sunny, tropical, relaxing—and best of all, budget-friendly. The conversion rate was definitely to our advantage, but I’m talking about booking the trip. After doing a little online research, I stumbled upon this coupon code for Orbitz.com: ENTERTAIN200. If you book a qualifying package (both hotel and flight) before Dec. 31, 2009 for six or more nights of travel to Mexico, the Caribbean or Hawaii, use the code and you’ll score a whopping $200 off the total. What a great way to start a vacation!

Save money with smart storage

save money with smart food storageHow many times have you reached into the corners of your fridge or freezer and turned up food that might still be ok to eat, but you tossed it because you weren’t sure? Or food that would have been fine, if only you had wrapped it properly?

Wasted food is never a good thing, but in these challenging economic times, it’s even more important to make the most out of every grocery dollar. Enter StillTasty.com, an online encyclopedia of foods that lists shelf life and smart storage information. This comprehensive site, created by food safety expert Jeanie Revell, who spent 20 years working for the Canadian government educating consumers on food safety and nutrition, offers information on hundreds of foods. It even addresses how long packaged foods will last once they’re opened. The easy-to-use site also gives answers to common food safety questions and articles on subjects such as safe ways to thaw frozen food.

Unclog your sink with ease

unclog your sink Before this year, I was always a renter. So whenever I had a clogged sink I thought nothing of buying the heaviest duty Drano-type of product I could to clear it.

I didn’t even know it could eat away at your pipes, until my landlord saw it in my apartment one day and had a conniption fit. The next day while I was at work, she spent several hours pulling hair out of my tub and sink drains with tweezers, and when I came home, she placed mesh wire drain covers over the drains.

So when I finally bought a house last year, it was burned into my brain — never pour Drano or any of those other chemical products down my pipes. So when our increasingly sluggish bathroom sink drain finally hit the “gross” mark this weekend, I was almost ready to call roto-rooter.

Get away for less

april-book-club-coverTo me, there’s nothing better than curling up on the couch with a good book and losing track of time. And because I’ve been on a money-saving kick recently, this is something I’ve been doing a lot of lately. As soon as I finish what I’m currently reading, I’ll be diving in to our latest book club selection The Inn at Eagle Point, which hits Walmart stores on March 31.

Just like our previous book club selections, we’ll be hosting an online discussion for The Inn at Eagle Point each week on our blog. Come on over on April 3rd to chat about Chapters 1-3. In the meantime, check out some of our other favorite book club blogs.
