My husband and I really want a dog (a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel—if I have my way), but because we’re gone all day at work and we live in a small apartment, we’re putting our wish aside until we’re ready to take on the responsibility. When that time comes, here’s where I’ll be searching for the perfect pup (steal these ideas if you’re looking for a pet!):

Breed-specific rescue groups. I’ve already scoped out a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel group in my area—find an organization near you at akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm.

Local shelters. Of course, I’ll try my local humane society or SPCA. To locate a shelter near you, visit pets911.com/local-shelters-and-rescues and enter your zip code.

My vet. I found my cats via a poster on the bulletin board at my vet’s office. A local woman had seven kittens to give away, and I adopted two of them. Check with your vet to see if they have a similar board or know of any pets that need homes.

Petfinder.com. This site has listings of homeless pets at shelters and adoption organizations. Just be sure to visit with the pet before you adopt to be sure you’re a good match.
