Keys to a long-distance marriage
I recently came across an interesting newspaper article about couples who live apart for financial reasons—maybe one spouse got offered a job in another state or country and couldn’t pass up the paycheck. Are you and your family in the same boat? Here are some tips garnered from the article:
Take advantage of technology. Many of the couples interviewed use Skype, software that lets you video chat with faraway loved ones using an Internet connection. This way, you can catch up with and see your significant other “in person.”
Be available. One man in the article sleeps with his cell phone next to him so his children can reach him 24 hours a day.
Visit as often as possible. One couple who lives in different countries has a rule that they must meet up at least once every five weeks for a minimum of five days.
Look for the positives. Being apart from your spouse can be lonely, but not seeing each other often can also spice up your marriage. One woman said, “the physical distance has been exhilarating for our relationship.”

Beat the winter hair blues
The cold, dry winter air coupled with harsh indoor heating can wreak havoc to your hair, leaving them dry, limp and prone to static. Here are a few no-cost tricks to beat the winter hair blues.
Shampoo less. Are your locks super dry? Unless you have super oily hair, skip shampoo entirely and just use conditioner.
Leave conditioner in. Don’t rinse out conditioner completely. Leaving a bit in will double as a leave-in conditioner.
Avoid hot showers. We know it’s cold out, but don’t do it. It can worsen a flaky scalp and make strands rougher and harder to manage. Wash with warm water instead.
Control static. Spritz hairspray directly onto a natural-bristle brush, then smooth it through hair from root to tips.
Prevent hat hair. Before putting on your hat, sweep hair into a high ponytail on top of the head. That way, when the hat comes off, your roots will still be lifted.

(Seriously cheap) moisturizers
Beat the winter itch and keep your body soft and smooth with these cold-weather skin savers:
For normal skin
Jergens Natural Renew Daily Moisturizer, $8; at mass retailers.
Packed with potent antioxidants—blueberry, pomegranate and grapeseed extracts—typically used in face treatments, this lightweight moisturizer softens skin without leaving any kind of residue.
For dry skin
Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Oil; $11; at Wal-Mart and other mass retailers.
Slap this on as soon as you towel off after bathing. This dry oil sinks in quickly (it won’t stain your clothes) and leaves behind a subtle cocoa scent.
For extremely dry skin
Vaseline Intensive Rescue Clinical Therapy, $5; at mass retailers.
Smooth on this prescription strength formula to calm and soothe chronic cracks, scales and flakes. Although it’s ultra-rich, it spreads easily to protect you all day.
