Great deals at the grocery store

Posted by Julie Parrish, a Shopping Strategist and co-owner of Hotcouponworld.com

great post-christmas deals at the grocery storeThe best post-holiday bargains aren’t always at the department store—they are hiding in the grocery store.  While other people are out returning gifts and chasing clearance deals, you’ll find me at the meat and deli cases at my local grocery stores. Why?  You just had a huge holiday meal—no one is thinking about buying more prime rib.  Yet the rib roasts that didn’t sell before Christmas have to get sold.  The store’s loss becomes your gain the day after Christmas, as you can find rich meats marked down by 50 percent or more.  For example, meat that normally sells for $9.99 a pound that was on sale for $3.99 a pound, can now be found on clearance at $2.00 a pound.  That’s an 80 percent savings.

It’s not just beef.  Look for whole pork loin in a bag, fresh turkeys and boneless chicken breast.  In addition to holiday meats, many regular cuts will be discounted as well. Stretch your dollar an extra mile by slicing whole pork or rib roast for sandwiches. Tired of looking at turkey?  Freeze it and pull it out in a month or two.

There’s a good chance that clearance sweater may still be at the store later in the weekend, but prime cuts of lean meat at annual rock bottom prices won’t be.  You can fill your freezer for months without breaking the bank.  But get there early on the 26th to beat the other savvy shoppers!
