Save on your pet’s healthcare

pet bills

Struggling to pay your vet bills? Check out the ASPCA’s ideas for saving on vet care. Some of the best tips:

-Personalize your pet’s vaccines. Some shots might be optional for your furry friend, so talk to your vet about tailoring your pet’s vaccine protocol to his needs.

-Don’t skip exams. It’s much more expensive—and risky—to treat illnesses than to protect against them, the ASPCA says.

-Shop around. Grab your last vet bill and call other practices in your area to compare prices. How much do they charge for an exam, for example? You might be able to save money by switching to a lower-priced practitioner.

A few more tips: Request a free exam for referring a friend to the vet’s practice. My vet offers this deal, and it saved me about $60. Also, be sure to ask how much each procedure costs before agreeing to it—for example, bloodwork can be pricey and might not always be necessary.
