New post on the book blog
Happy Halloween!
I just posted my thoughts on Chapters 6 and 7 of Thank You For All Things onto the book club blog. With the weather really cooling off here in New York, this weekend seems like it’ll be the perfect time to curl up on the couch and do some more reading!
(Haven’t gotten a copy of the book yet? You can pick one up at Wal-Mart.)

Get clearer skin
Did you know that more than half of adult women experience acne at some point? My skin is usually pretty clear, but I often get a mean zit before “my friend” visits once a month.
When it comes to treating problem skin, Instead of fighting breakouts with harsh—and costly—pimple zappers that only irritate and dry out my skin, I’ve been treating them with a more friendly ingredient: tea tree oil. Since it’s antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory, this green zit fighter makes for a great spot treatment for acne, especially the inflamed kind (think: those angry red whiteheads).
I buy it pure at my local natural food store, but you can always stock up online (mothernature.com). Just dip a cotton swab into the solution and dab it onto the affected area a few times a day. And to prevent new spots from erupting, you can also put a few drops in your other facial products—toner, moisturizer or mask.

Give to charity for free
On my “to do” list every day: donate to charity. And every day, I do just that—without spending a cent, and in less than a few seconds. Sounds too good to be true, right? Here’s my secret: The Hunger Site. All I have to do is click the big yellow button that says “Click Here to Give.” With each click, two nonprofit organizations Mercy Corps and Feeding America, donate food to food banks nationwide.
There’s no catch. The site’s sponsors buy ads that appear on the site for a specific period of time. The number of clicks that occur during that time are billed over to the sponsor, who then pays for the charitable donation — so you don’t have to. You can click once daily.
While you’re there, check out its sister sites, too. Just by clicking for free, you can give:
-free mammograms through The Breast Cancer Site
-free child healthcare through The Child Health Site
-free books through The Literacy Site
-protection for endangered habitats at The Rainforest Site
-free food and care to animals at The Animal Rescue Site
Sign up for daily e-reminders at each one!
Can giving back possibly get any easier?

Free Tacos at Taco Bell
Even if you’re not much of a baseball fan, there’s still a reason to get excited during the World Series: free tacos! That’s right, for the second straight year Taco Bell will serve up free tacos for any stolen base during a game.
Thank Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett for your first complimentary south-of-the-border meal. As promised, Bartlett’s stolen base in Game 1 means free Crunchy Seasoned Tacos for everyone on Tuesday, October 28 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m at Taco Bell locations nationwide.
So even if you’re not crazy about a team, by all means, root for the stolen bases!

Fun fabrics for less than $20

Whenever I get bored with my home décor, I turn to fabric websites to give me some inspiration. Fabric is one of the best ways to update your home for a small chunk of change. I have some old chairs with upholstered seats that I change the fabric on seasonally with the help of a staple gun. Here are some great prints that I want to incorporate into my home. They would be great for my chair, or making pillows, curtains, or even tablecloths. The best part is they are all under $20 a yard!
Must-See Fabrics:
Jamestown Toile (Brown/French Blue)
Carolina Damask (Pink)
Water Lotus (Ivory)
Durham (Black/White)

Find inexpensive eco-friendly grocery bags

I’ve officially decided to never again settle for plastic bags at the grocery store. It’s about time I jump on this reusable bag movement. So, if I’m going to use the same bag over and over again, it had better be cute! Some of them can get pricey, in the $20-$40 range, but I scoured the net to find the most affordable (and most attractive!) totes. Which of these do you like the best?
Gorgeously Green ChicoBag, $5
The design comes from the book Gorgeously Green by Sophie Uliano. (Hint: If you already have a copy of this book, enter the first word on page 25 in the code field online and you get the bag for free!)
The Jute Bag, $19.99
It’s 100% biodegradable, and conveniently comes in a five-pack.
The Green Bag, $10
90210 star Jennie Garth teamed up with Green Works and designed this bag. Part of the proceeds go to The Sierra Club.
Flip & Tumble 24-7 Bag, $12
It comes in colors like raspberry and lime, and rolls up easily so you can just keep it in your handbag at all times.
Keen on Green Owl Tote, $1.50
Can the price of this polypropylene bag be beat?
