Healthy kid-friendly snacks

It’s that time again — back to school means packing lunches, and trying to find foods the kids will eat instead of trading, which you can feel good about, too. Here are a few suggestions:

Healthy Handfuls
These handy little snacks — available in flavors like Lemon Vanilla Koala Krackers, Peanut Butter Python Pretzels, Cheddar Cheese Lucky Duckies and Oatmeal Raisin Crocodile Cookies — are fun, taste great and make a perfect kid-pleasing lunchtime treat. The good news for mom? They’re also organic, and made without trans fats, high fructose corn syrup or artificial colors. Pick them up at Wal-Mart, Costco, and other supermarkets, or online at amazon.com, $4 for a 6-oz. box.

Horizon 8-oz. Milk Cartons
Instead of a sugary juice, pack one of these calcium-rich reduced-fat milk containers for your child. Their special packaging means they don’t have to be refrigerated, and they come in regular, vanilla, chocolate or strawberry flavors. In supermarkets, $19 for 18 8-oz. containers.

Annie’s Organic Bunny Fruit Snacks
They taste like regular gummy candies to kids, but you’ll know they’re getting 100 percent of their vitamin C for the day with these little 70-calorie packs. We like the Berry Patch flavor, with strawberry, cherry and raspberry gummies. Pick them up at Whole Foods and other natural markets, or online at davidsnaturalmarket.com, $5.40 for a 4-oz. box with 5 .8-oz. pouches.

Lara Bar
These bars, which are made of a mix of fruit and nuts, are 100 percent natural, have no added sugar and provide one serving of fruit. And with dessert-like flavors like Chocolate Coconut, Banana Bread, and Peanut Butter Cookie, they make a great substitute for a candy bar. Find them at Target, Trader Joe’s, and other supermarkets, $1.50 for a 1.7-oz bar.

Mott’s Plus Sauce
Cranberry Raspberry, Pomegranate, Harvest Apple, oh my! Your kids will love these new fruit cup flavors and you can feel good knowing that each serving has no added sugar and an added benefit (Harvest Apple is fortified with calcium, Pomegranate with antioxidants and Cranberry Raspberry has added fiber.)  They’re available at supermarkets nationwide , $2.89 for 4 3.9-oz. cups.

What are your kids’ lunch favorites?
